ISO 9001:2015 certification support is not a single service, and knowing that before you start saves you money.

When a customer requirement forces ISO 9001 onto your agenda, the first search usually returns a mix of companies that all appear to offer the same thing. They do not. There are three distinct roles in this process, they are performed by different organizations, and the separation is not a market preference. It is written into the rules that govern accredited certification.

Understanding that separation before you buy ISO 9001:2015 certification support saves money and avoids a genuinely bad outcome: paying someone to build your system who is not permitted to certify it, then discovering the certification body you wanted cannot touch you for two years.

2026 edition update: ISO published ISO 9001:2026 on September 16, 2026, and withdrew the 2015 edition. Organizations that already hold an ISO 9001:2015 certificate can keep it until September 30, 2029, under a three-year transition. The three roles below work the same way under both editions, so everything in this guide on ISO 9001:2015 certification support also applies when you move to the 2026 version.

The direct answer: three separate roles exist. A preparation specialist helps you build the quality management system, run internal audits, and get ready. A certification body performs the two-stage audit and issues the certificate. An accreditation body oversees certification bodies. Under ISO/IEC 17021-1, the international standard for certification bodies, a certification body is not permitted to help design, implement or maintain the management systems of organizations it certifies, and where such work has been done there is a recognized two-year separation before certification. So no single organization legitimately does both the preparation and the certification. Anyone offering both should be questioned closely.

The separation between preparing a system and certifying it is a rule, not a business model choice.

The Three Roles in ISO 9001:2015 Certification Support, Clearly Separated

  1. Preparation support. Gap analysis against the standard, mapping and documenting how work actually happens, building the quality management system, training your people, and running internal audits and management review. This is where the real effort sits, and it is what most organizations mean when they say they need help.
  2. The certification body. An independent, accredited organization that performs the Stage 1 documentation review and the Stage 2 implementation audit, decides on certification, issues the certificate, and returns for surveillance audits. You select and contract them directly.
  3. The accreditation body. The organization that assesses and accredits certification bodies against ISO/IEC 17021-1. You never hire one, but their accreditation is what makes a certificate credible to your customers.

Why ISO 9001:2015 Certification Support Is Kept Separate From Auditing

This is the part worth understanding properly, because it explains how the entire market for ISO 9001:2015 certification support is structured.

ISO/IEC 17021-1 sets requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems, and it includes explicit impartiality provisions. A certification body, and entities under its control, are not to offer or provide management system consultancy. Where a client has received such consultancy from a body related to a certification body, a recognized mitigation is that the certification body does not certify that management system for a minimum of two years afterward. Verified 22 July 2026.

The logic is simple. Auditing a system you designed yourself is marking your own homework, and a certificate produced that way is worth nothing to the customer who demanded it. The rule protects the value of the certificate you are buying, and it is the reason ISO 9001:2015 certification support and certification audits always come from different organizations.

2 Years
The recognized separation period where a certification body or a related body has helped design, implement or maintain an organization's management system. This is why choosing your preparation help and your certification body carelessly can create a problem that takes years to unwind.

What Kind of ISO 9001:2015 Certification Support Do You Actually Need?

ISO 9001:2015 certification support is not one thing, and matching it to your situation matters more than the provider's brochure.

Four situations, four kinds of ISO 9001:2015 certification support

You have orderly processes but nothing documented. You need documentation help and someone who knows what the standard actually requires. This is the lightest version of ISO 9001:2015 certification support, and it is mostly translation work.

Your processes are genuinely disorganized. Documenting chaos produces a documented mess that will fail Stage 2 or pass and then decay. You need process improvement first, then documentation. Doing them in the wrong order is the most expensive mistake in ISO 9001:2015 certification support.

You have a system that failed an audit. You need someone who can read the nonconformities and tell you whether the problem is documentation, implementation, or leadership. These are different failures with different fixes, and each calls for a different kind of ISO 9001:2015 certification support.

You need to build internal capability. If you want your own people running internal audits and maintaining the system long term, that is a training objective. Buying a finished system from outside leaves you dependent on whoever built it. Good ISO 9001:2015 certification support leaves your team able to run the system without outside help.

What Should You Ask Before Hiring ISO 9001:2015 Certification Support?

  • Are you connected to any certification body? If yes, ask directly how that affects which bodies can certify you afterward. A straight answer here is a good sign.
  • Will you write our system, or build it with our people? A system written entirely by an outsider is a system your team will not follow when the auditor asks them about it.
  • What happens after certification? Surveillance audits continue on a cycle. Ask who maintains the system and whether your people will be capable of it.
  • Have you worked in our kind of operation? Sector experience matters most in regulated environments, where some steps that look like waste are legal requirements.
  • What would make you tell us not to proceed? Certification is not right for every organization at every moment. Someone with judgment has a list.
  • Can you show us what the internal audit process will look like? The standard requires internal audits and management review. If a provider is vague about these, they are vague about the parts that fail organizations at Stage 2.

How the 2026 Revision Affects ISO 9001:2015 Certification Support

ISO 9001:2026 is an evolution of the 2015 edition, not a rewrite. The high-level structure, the process approach, the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, and risk-based thinking all carry over. What changes is the emphasis, and those changes land directly on the preparation work.

  • Context and interested parties. You are expected to reassess your context with more attention to strategic and external factors, and to give stakeholder expectations more weight in decisions.
  • Climate change, resilience, quality culture, and ethics. These are now addressed as explicit requirements instead of being left to interpretation.
  • Risks and opportunities. The new edition treats them in a more differentiated way, with a stronger push toward acting on opportunities.
  • Planning changes and knowledge. Requirements for planning changes are expanded, and organizational knowledge is expected to be used and shared more actively.
  • Leadership. Top management involvement is strengthened.

For an organization starting from zero today, the practical advice is simple: build to the 2026 edition. Certification bodies are expected to stop issuing new ISO 9001:2015 certificates partway through the transition, and a 2015 certificate issued late in the period still expires on September 30, 2029. Building a 2015 system now means paying for a second round of changes within three years.

For an organization already certified, the transition means a gap analysis, targeted updates to documented information and processes, staff and internal auditor training, and a transition audit scheduled with your certification body well before the deadline. Many organizations combine the transition audit with a surveillance or recertification audit to control cost. That is still ISO 9001:2015 certification support in practice, aimed at moving an existing system forward instead of building a new one.

What a Typical Preparation Engagement Looks Like

Every organization is different, but sound preparation follows a predictable sequence. Knowing it helps you judge whether a proposal is complete.

  1. Gap analysis. A structured comparison of how you operate today against each requirement of the standard, ending in a prioritized list of what is missing.
  2. Process improvement where needed. Processes that are unstable or inconsistent get fixed before they are written down, often using Lean Six Sigma tools.
  3. Documentation and system build. Your people write and test procedures, records, and controls with guidance, so the system reflects real work.
  4. Training. Staff learn their responsibilities under the system, and selected employees are trained to run internal audits.
  5. Internal audit and management review. The system runs for a period, is audited internally, and is reviewed by top management, producing the evidence a certification body expects to see.
  6. Certification audits. You contract an accredited certification body for the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits. Your preparation provider can help you respond to findings, but does not perform the audit.

If a proposal skips internal audits and management review, or promises a certificate by a fixed date, treat that as a warning sign. The certification body decides the outcome, and no provider of ISO 9001:2015 certification support can guarantee it.

Where Gurley Leadership Solutions Fits in ISO 9001:2015 Certification Support

To be explicit about the boundary: Gurley Leadership Solutions is not a certification body and cannot issue ISO certificates. That work must be done by an independent accredited certification body, which you contract separately.

What this business provides is ISO 9001:2015 certification support on the preparation side: gap analysis, process documentation, quality management system development, and employee training, combined with Lean Six Sigma implementation so the documentation work improves your operation rather than only satisfying an auditor. That combination matters most in the second situation described above, where processes need improving before they are worth documenting.

Gurley Leadership Solutions is based in Ajax and works with organizations across Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Pickering, Barrie, Mississauga, and the wider Durham Region and Greater Toronto Area, in sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, not-for-profit, engineering, and operations. For what certification itself involves, including the audit stages and typical costs, see ISO 9001 certification: what it involves and what it costs. Frequently Asked Questions

What expert can help with ISO 9001:2015 certification support?

ISO 9001:2015 certification support on the preparation side covers gap analysis, process documentation, quality management system development, training, and internal audits. That is a different role from the certification body, which performs the audit and issues the certificate. Gurley Leadership Solutions provides preparation support in Durham Region and the GTA, combined with Lean Six Sigma implementation, and is not a certification body.

Can one company prepare us and also certify us?

No. ISO/IEC 17021-1 provides that a certification body and entities under its control are not to offer or provide management system consultancy, and where such consultancy has come from a related body, a recognized mitigation is that certification does not proceed for a minimum of two years. Auditing a system you designed yourself would undermine the certificate's value.

What is an accreditation body?

An accreditation body assesses and accredits certification bodies against ISO/IEC 17021-1. You never hire one directly, but their accreditation is what makes a certificate credible to customers, which is why accredited certification is usually specified in supplier requirements and tenders.

Should we improve our processes before documenting them?

If your processes are genuinely disorganized, yes. Documenting a disorganized process produces a documented mess that either fails the Stage 2 audit or passes and then decays, because nobody follows it. Improving first and documenting second costs less overall and produces a system your people will actually use.

How do we get started?

Book a free 15 minute phone call with Malcolm Gurley through the button above, or call 416.669.7644, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There is no cost and no obligation for the initial conversation.

Is ISO 9001:2015 still valid after the 2026 revision?

Yes, for now. ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid until September 30, 2029, under a three-year transition to ISO 9001:2026. Any ISO 9001:2015 certification support you buy today should include a plan for moving your system to the 2026 edition before that deadline.

How long does ISO 9001:2015 certification support take?

Timelines vary widely. The biggest factors are how stable your processes are today, how much documented information already exists, and how much time your people can give the project. A gap analysis is the fastest way to get a realistic timeline for your ISO 9001:2015 certification support.
